HISTORY OF THE KIWANIS CLUB OF HAMPSTEAD, NC, INC.
By Sal Ferrotti, Founding Member
It all started when I saw an article in the local newspaper stating that International President Jerry Cristiano was attending an installation dinner on Topsail Island, NC. I was a Lt. Governor in New York District when Jerry Christiano was Governor. Living in Hampstead, NC and not being a Kiwanian since I moved to the south, I decided to go and visit with Jerry prior to the dinner and say hello. I met with Jerry and he introduced me to Lt Governor Don Curlee of Division 18 of the Carolinas District, who was going to build a new Kiwanis Club in Hampstead the following week.
Don Curlee asked me if I would help him build this new club in my community. I agreed to help him and the new Kiwanis Club of Hampstead, sponsored by Kiwanis Clubs of Jacksonville and Topsail Island was organized on April 1, 1997. Governor Thomas J. Dimmock installed the officers and Directors on Charter Night, May 27, 1997 at the Belvedere Plantation and Country Club with the assistance of Lt. Governor James D. “Don” Curlee. Salvatore Ferrotti (that's me!) was installed as Charter President. The new club started with thirty charter members. The club meets for breakfast every Thursday morning. Today the club has forty five members. The Club has served with seven Distinguished Past Presidents, one Distinguished Past Lt. Governor and former Lt. Governor Heather Williams. (First female Lt. Gov. in our Division.)
Our first service project was to build a playground at the new North Topsail Elementary School in Hampstead. Under the leadership of our Secretary and Chairperson, Cindy McLeod our club with the assistance of funds and help from the community built the playground in 1998. Few years later we built a Pavilion at the NTES. We manage Four annual $1,000.00, Robert Carpentar Memorial Scholarships to senior students at Topsail and Heide Trask High Schools. The 80-Acre Hampstead Kiwanis Park. Terrific Kids Program at both Elementary Schools. Awarding all preschool, kindergarten, 1st grade children with ribbons at NTES Fall Festival for best costumes. Adopt-A-Highway Program. Donations to Kiwanis International and Carolinas Foundations, Meals on Wheels, Boys & Girls Homes of NC at Lake Waccamaw, Victory Junction Gang, Hospice and South Topsail Elementary School Library Fund, Eagle Scout Recognition, Young Children Priority one project, and Community Christmas Project.
Our first fundraiser was Kiwanis Peanut Day Sales. Later a yard Sale, Golf Tournament and Mini Rose sales on Mothers Day and Ford Bubble Gum Machines commissions. Later we had Easter Egg and Trick or Treat at the Park, Annual Spaghetti dinner, Cheese and Wine and Turkey Trot at the Park to build Dale’s Fitness Trail.
Our club sponsors K-Kids in all three Elementary Schools (first K-Kids Club in the Carolinas District), Builders Club at the Topsail Middle School and Key Club at Heide Trask High School.
